Magdalena Bay, Baja California Sur, Mexico

This photo was taken in Magdalena Bay during the annual Mexican sardine run. I went on a freediving expedition to see sea lions and marlin feeding on bait balls — compact spheres of fish trying to protect themselves — and I was absolutely shocked when, on day three, this Bryde’s whale showed up out of nowhere and started feeding on the bait fish right in front of me. Truly the most unexpected, once-in-a-lifetime moment that I will forever cherish and never forget.

A young leopard, full of curiosity and confidence (not to mention hunger), made his move on a squirrel. It was a classic game of cat and... well, squirrel. He crept, scrambled, missed — and the squirrel vanished with a flick of the tail and zero concern. No meal was caught, but the lesson (and entertainment) was priceless. Just another day of learning the ropes in the wild.

Mallard ducks bathe by quickly and repeatedly dunking their heads in the water. I love to use fast shutter speeds to capture the sequence and the water rolling off their bodies. The early morning sunlight highlights the beautiful iridescent head feathers.

During a boat cruise on the Okavango River, in the north of Namibia, we came across a group of hippos, and as we were getting closer to their territory, this one started the usual displaying, letting us know that we were not welcome. There was just enough time to take this quick shot, and we headed back, leaving the whole group alone and free to express their natural behavior.

I got to spend a week in Utah’s West Desert following the Onaqui’s wild horses, a herd of 200 strong. One night, we were lucky enough to witness them take off all together, racing toward the sunset in a haze of dust. It was an absolutely breathtaking moment I will never forget.

My partner and I took a road trip through Washington and hiked to the summit of Mount Storm King. At the top, a flock of camp robber birds (Canada jays) appeared, bold and unbothered, happy to linger with us in exchange for a bit of bird feed. We took in the sweeping view with these unexpected companions quietly perched around us — wild, curious, and oddly at ease.

Here are my eternal brothers, standing in front of my “Studio Baye.” Some are still living, some have passed away. We were young, free, and fiery. It was a time when we could dance all night long and then head to the mosque to pray Fajr. The studio was our second home, where we reunited with friends and prepared tea. I took their pictures, but it was through them that I learned the most important lesson: How to embrace modernity without sacrificing our traditions. I feel emotional when I see this now because it's not just the past. We are proof that a whole generation can move between two eras without ever falling apart or getting lost.

This young woman was celebrating Eid al-Fitr with her family during Ramadan, jumping between rocks just as a wave was about to crash. The family said they came to Camps Bay every year to mark the end of the holy month. I love the energy, the colors, and the joy captured in this frame.
